Following the release of his latest single Dew Point (made in collaboration with his partner and HAGW alum Rena Johnson), we tapped in with Los Angeles-based musician and creative Billy Macadamia for the scoop on West Hollywood and beyond.
BIRTH (2004)
Easily one the most overlooked and powerful flicks of the 00s, BIRTH is mystical, haunting and all-around hard to digest, but difficult has never looked so beautiful. Kidmans best performance too. For some time, it was available in “THREE by Jonathan Glazer” on Criterion. Hunt it down if you can.
THE SARAH BOOK By Scott McClanahan
One of my favorite books of all time. I was lucky enough to read this last year and have passed it on to a few close friends since, all with the same response. Written in what feels like 30 small passages, The Sarah Book is an (auto) fictional account of a man named Scott (yes, the author) and his spiral into alcoholism that eventually leads to the destruction of his family and divorce from his wife, Sarah (yes, his actual wife’s name was Sarah.) Brutal, unforgiving, self-sabotaging, but also redemptive, this book comes as close to perfect as fiction can get, and feels so personal at times it’s hard not to cry. It’s my dream film adaptation.
The OG episodes were and still are some of the most important and iconic docs of an era in skateboarding that's gone but not forgotten. They’ve been on and off for more than a decade, but new and old episodes are all insanely good. The Antwuan Dixon and Ed Templeton episodes are amazing. Watch from the very beginning.
A truly unbelievable fragrance. Inspired by the smell of smoke rolling from a lit cigarette. Woody, spicy, smoky with just the right amount of sweet. Non-smokers beware, your craving might come back.
Adam Curtis is a divisive figure depending on who you ask, mostly because he is unwilling to take a side, tip-toeing his views and morality and throwing them to the side for something that feels far more abstract. In this 6 part mini-series, Curtis compiles over 10 hours of lost footage from the BBC offices in Moscow to offer an unsparing, difficult, and visually hypnotic look into the collapse of communism, an attempted transition to democracy, and the eventual collapse of a country. With no music and no voice over, the viewer watches a system crumble from the richest person to the poorest. It’s eerie, educational, and above all insanely watchable. Available for free on YouTube.
A red-checkered Italian Hollywood staple, there’s no way you wont have a good time. The great thing is that their Martinis are extra dirty, and they give you the sidecar! It’s like having two drinks in one. They closed down due to a car driving through the space, so now with the doors open it’s tough to get a table. Make sure to reserve in advance, or do what we do and pull up to the bar!
BABY-AT-THE-BEACH TIRED
This is the ultimate feeling. Use this term for any wholesome, sun-drenched activity that leaves you naturally tired. 6-mile hike? Baby tired. Day at the beach? Baby tired. Preferably ended with a movie while lying in cold, clean sheets.
DEW POINT EP
For some selfish plugging, my girlfriend (love of my life, best friend and favorite artist) Rena Johnson and I have been working on a collaborative ambient EP that will be released in full soon. Initially, I was developing the tracks for a different project of hers. We decided to come together and make it a creative project, where she took on all of the visuals and I handled the sound, giving these tunes a home in a world that felt like ours. They’re songs for laying about, waking up, walking through the woods, etc. The first single is available now on all platforms.
