This week we called in our friend Samuel Aaron to give us the lowdown on what he’s been into and up to as he preps for his set at the Logan Square Arts Festival at the end of the month. Be sure to keep up with Sam here.
Sitting on a Park Bench + Eating a Sandwich
It really is the simple things. I grabbed a “PORCHETT’A BOUT IT” sandwich from Olivia’s Market the other day and ate it outside in the sun… turned my whole day around. Bonus points if paired with a fun caffeinated beverage.
Best cooking channel on YouTube, hands down. All killer, no filler. Highly recommend his video on homemade salsa.
Trader Joe’s Tinned Fish
It makes me laugh that tinned fish has become a Tiktok trend. Whatever the equivalent of a sweet-tooth is for salty/pickled foods… I have that. (I already call dibs on “Brinetooth” for an indie band name.) The smoked mussels are big favorites, throw em on a salty cracker or chip and you got a perfect snack. Probably also good on pasta.
Being the Early Bird + Getting the Worm
I’m the opposite of a morning person – and last Lé Bump I forgot to buy early bird tickets so I paid full price at the door – but the other day I literally saw this bird with a worm in its mouth… straight chills. So inspiring…
Dogcatcher
Played a show with these guys at the beginning of the month, and this record has been on constant rotation since. Mitch is a remarkable singer-songwriter, and this solo EP of his is equal parts earnest and catchy. Not a bad song on this thing, and the full-band live set he’s orchestrated takes it all to another level. Keep an eye out for their next show in town, you’ll be hearing about this band everywhere before long.
RIYL: Neil Young, MJ Lenderman, John Prine, Big Thief
This House is Creaking
Another Chicago act you may not have heard of yet. This mysterious, glitchy post-punk duo just dropped their debut single. It’s intensely good.
RIYL: Guerilla Toss, 100 gecs, Godly the Ruler, underscores
Shameless self-plug. I’m playing at Logan Square Arts Festival at the end of this month. It’s an incredible free street fest booked by the wonderful folks at Sleeping Village, with live music all weekend, right under the monument in the middle of the square. The lineup this year is unreal and I’m really truly so fucking honored to be included.
I’ll be playing with my band from noon-12:45pm on Sunday, June 30th at the Milwaukee Stage. We’ve been rehearsing a really great set, mostly unreleased songs from my upcoming debut album. LSAF is probably the first proper all-ages Samuel Aaron show, really a family-friendly brunchtime affair, and I’m hoping to see lots of friends drinking cold brew and eating bagels out in the crowd.
In regards to my recommendations for the rest of the festival, make sure to catch McKinley Dixon, Hemlock, and Oyeme. See you there!
Lastly, here’s “have a good week,” updated with 10 new songs. Hopefully, there’s something in there for you, but if not, that’s your problem.
